Your First Aquarium:
A Step-By-Step Guide

Everything you need to know to build a thriving underwater ecosystem from scratch.

1

Choose Your Tank & Location

Bigger is actually easier! Small tanks (under 10 gallons) are harder to maintain as water parameters change rapidly. Aim for a 20-gallon starter tank if space allows. Ensure it's away from direct sunlight to prevent algae blooms.

2

Add Substrate & Hardscape

Rinse your gravel or sand thoroughly until the water runs clear. Add 2-3 inches of substrate. Place your rocks and driftwood (hardscape) now before adding water.

3

Equipment Setup

Install your filter, heater, and lighting. Do not plug them in yet! Ensure your heater is set to the correct tropical range (75-80°F for most species).

4

The Nitrogen Cycle (CRITICAL)

This is the most important step. You MUST cycle your tank for 2-4 weeks before adding fish. This allows beneficial bacteria to grow, which process toxic fish waste into safe compounds.

Ready to choose your fish?

Once your tank is cycled (Step 4), it's time to pick your inhabitants!
